Thus, the Ministry of MSME assists the states in their efforts to encourage entrepreneurship, and the various employment opportunities created by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and help them to increase their competitiveness. Earlier, under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act of 2006, all the enterprises were expected to be registered with District Industries Centre but a very large number of enterprises were not registered in this manner due to a large amount of paperwork involved and therefore couldn’t draw the benefits of the different government schemes. Therefore in September 2015, the Ministry of MSME introduced the Udyog Aadhaar registration for wider coverage of MSMEs as it can be done easily online on the portal created by the Ministry of MSME. Udyog Aadhaar is a unique 12 digit government identification number provided by the Ministry of MSME.

The MSMEs are divided into three categories:

  1.  Micro Enterprises: The industries involved in the manufacturing sector where the investment is less than Rs. 25 lacs and the industries in the service sector where the investment is less than Rs. 10 Lacs.

  11. National Industrial Classification (NIC) Code: The NIC Code must be entered from the National Industrial Classification handbook.
  12. Investment: Total amount of investment in terms of machinery and equipment by the business.
  13. District Industry Centre (DIC): The details of the DIC (District Industry Center) nearest to such business, if needed.
